We can make a difference to the horticultural industry by supporting post-harvest and orchard staff, together with growers, understand the science behind the business. Growing, packing and storing fruit is not the same as manufacturing widgets; there are seasonal effects, orchard management effects, fruit to fruit variability and constrained resources. By understanding how fruit matures, why temperature, ethylene and other variables affect fruit quality means that processes can improve, risks understood and appropriate compromises made in tricky circumstances.
